Smokin' Betty's brings authentic fire smoked barbeque to Boston's Northshore!

Steve and Marie had dreamed up the idea of having a BBQ place in Salem for years.  They felt there was room in Salem's thriving restaurant scene for good 'ol southern food and wanted to be the ones to bring a touch of the south to the Witch City!

The Food

There are many schools of thought on the best ways to cook barbecue.  The term itself has become somewhat generic, referring to anything grilled. At Betty's, they're referring to a wood fired indirect heat source. The cook times using this method usually take significantly longer than other cooking processes and run on much lower temperatures, hence the nickname "low and slow."  Smokin' Betty's believes this is the best way to produce quality barbecue - giving it outstanding flavor and texture.

A Little About Betty's
Smokin' Betty's is a relaxed, fun, family friendly environment - a large open space featuring a 20 seat bar, picnic tables, custom built high tops, and a small lounge area. During the warmer months we also have outside dining on our front porch and in our alleyway. Seating is communal. Get to know your neighbors!

A Little About the Building
For several decades, the building was known as the Klondike Club - a club for Salem's French Canadian residents. The building featured a bowling alley in its basement and as a nod to the past Betty's bar top was made from 100 year old bowling alley lanes. In addition, we acquired a mid-1950's Bowling shuffleboard for patron's enjoyment.

Otherwise known as Mrs. Tim Oliver, Erin has been working for Steve for the majority of her adult life. She is still trying to figure out how she came to this.

Erin loves unicorns, beer, and Morissey, not necessarily in that order.

The Art!

"One of the Greatest things about owning the Gulu..."

Betty's owner Steve Feldmann has has met and worked with many great artists over the years while choosing the art for Gulu-Gulu Cafe. When it came to deciding how to decorate Smokin' Betty's he approached a handful of his favorites, put them in a room together and asked them to get creative.

Dan Blakeslee

A prolific artist, Dan Blakeslee has made over 600 rock posters in his career some of which are featured in the book “Art of Modern Rock” published by Chronicle Books. He has done album covers for dozens of bands including Assembly of Dust, Slaid Cleaves, The Tan Vampires, Jonah Tolchin and many more. After seeing his posters, The Portsmouth Brewery (NH) asked Blakeslee to draft 8 beer label designs and the Northampton Brewery (MA) followed soon after commissioning him to make a label six pack design. His beer label art has garnered national recognition with the Alchemist Brewery’s (VT) “Heady Topper” in 2012 and “Focal Banger” in 2014. His silk screened posters traveled the USA in the “National Poster Retrospecticus” in 2013 curated by the LAP Gallery.

Greg Orfanos

I am a mixed media artist that works primarily with acrylic paint and collage. Making pictures that tell stories has always been a running theme in my work. Though a narrative is always prominent in my paintings, it is often portrayed in a surreal and allegorical way. My images are a composite of my daily routine, forgotten memories, random thoughts and epic dreams. My work is often embedded with a fascination of the bizarre, a bit of sarcasm and a tongue-in-cheek sensibility.

I can often be found in my studio creating, or walking around with my head in the clouds.

(When I was just starting out as a freelancer in the early 90s, I thought it'd be funny to sign my name "Mister Reusch", hoping potential clients would think I was some old, established guy.) I've created over 500 illustrations for the Bloomsbury book series, UNBORED, The Essential Field Guide to Serious Fun, UNBORED Games, UNBORED Adventure, and four activity kits. I've designed 150 posters and over 600 editorial illustrations, as well as t-shirts, greeting cards, calendars, cd covers, tattoos, and giant monster masks."
